Natya Kala Conference 2025

Navonmesha: Quest for Creative Excellence

Inspired by Bharata’s evocative verse, “प्रज्ञा नवनवोन्मेषशालिनी प्रतिभा मता,” the 43rd Natya Kala Conference centers on the concept of Pratibhaa—innate talent—and its vital role in achieving creative excellence. Navonmesha, meaning “ever-fresh blossoming,” embodies the spirit of innovation and renewal in the world of performing arts.

This year’s conference delves deep into the essence of creativity, tracing the artistic journeys of legendary maestros and scholars, while spotlighting the emerging voices of young researchers and performers shaping the future of Indian dance and theatre. At the heart of Navonmesha lies the dynamic interplay between tradition and modernity—honoring time-honored practices even as we reimagine them for contemporary expression.

Through scholarly presentations, stimulating panel discussions on topics such as cultivating discerning rasikas and reinterpreting classical texts, and immersive workshops in music, movement, and acting, the conference offers a holistic engagement with Natya—the integrated art of theatre.

Navonmesha is both a celebration and a call—to artists, thinkers, and art lovers—to explore, expand, and evolve. Join us in this vibrant exploration of artistic innovation, as we collectively shape the future of Indian performing arts.

Natya Kala Conference: Genesis and Journey

The Natya Kala Conference (NKC), conceived by Krishna Gana Sabha in 1981, is a distinguished platform dedicated to classical dance. It was envisioned as a space where dancers of exceptional merit—particularly those honored with the title Nrithya Choodamani—could come together to share their knowledge, perspectives, and deep understanding of the art form. Over the span of five days, these seasoned artists engage with an audience of like-minded individuals in an environment that fosters learning, dialogue, and appreciation for dance in all its dimensions.

Held annually, the NKC has evolved into a landmark event in the Indian classical arts calendar. It draws an eclectic mix of participants—dancers, scholars, rasikas, writers, commentators, and connoisseurs—who convene to collectively explore the nuances of dance and its many socio-cultural, historical, and artistic implications.

Each edition of the Conference is curated by a chosen convenor, who brings their intellect and vision to bear in shaping the event’s thematic focus. Through thoughtful selection of performers and presenters, the convenor orchestrates a dialogue around a central concept or idea, encouraging insightful discussion, critical reflection, and constructive debate—enriching the cultural discourse around Indian classical dance.

Smt Nirupama Rajendra and Sri T D Rajendra are acclaimed artists and founders of Abhinava Dance Company, recognized as one of India’s foremost husband–wife duos in classical dance. Over their 34-year career, they have distinguished themselves as versatile choreographers and performers, with Nirupama mastering both Kathak and Bharathanrithyam. Together, they have created over 200 original works and pioneered projects such as the research and video documentation of the 108 Deshi Marga Adavus. Their revival of the traditional “Madanothsava” festival, under Dr R Ganesh’s guidance, is a significant contribution to cultural heritage.

Commissioned by the Murty Foundation, they directed and documented the 7th-century Sanskrit play Bhagavadajjukam as per Natya Shastra guidelines. Both artists hold the “A TOP” grade from Doordarshan and are empanelled as “Outstanding Category” artists with ICCR.

They are recipients of several prestigious honors, including the Sangeet Natak Akademi’s “Akademi Puraskar” (the highest national recognition for performing artists, awarded by the President of India), “Karnataka Kalashree” (Government of Karnataka), “Nrithya Choodamani” (Sri Krishna Gana Sabha, Chennai), “U.S.K. Nirupama has served as an honorary member of the Karnataka Sangeeta Nruthya Academy. The couple recently convened the 42nd Natya Kala Conference “Abhijaata” by Krishna Gana Sabha, Chennai.
