Premise of Roots

Indian classical dance in the now is a constant work-in-progress; in an eternal state of evolution, dynamic and travelling into unchartered territories and unknown heights. Honestly, this would never have been possible without the foundation it is laid and built upon - a deep-rooted history, grammar and ethos that allow for freedom and innovation within the framework.

In this edition of Natya Kala Conference, titled Roots, from the vantage position where Indian classical dance is poised today, we dig deep and attempt to unearth, trace, and showcase the idea of where things come from. Roots will celebrate the beauty of genesis, the mystery of heritage and the lure of legacy that has stood the test of time. The 40th edition of the Natya Kala Conference by the Krishna Gana Sabha is curated for the second year, by the Bharatanatyam exponent, Rama Vaidyanathan.

This year's conference is supported by Rajika Puri in honour of her mentor, Indrani Rahman.

Natya Kala Conference: Genesis and Journey

The Natya Kala Conference, NKC for short, is a dance conference that was conceived by the Krishna Gana Sabha way back in 1981 with an intent to allow dancers of a certain class and caliber (those who were conferred the title of Nrithya Choodamani), to share their knowledge, insights and understanding of dance and its world at large with a group of like-minded people under the umbrella of a five-day conference.

NKC unfolds across five days (December 26 to December 30) every year and has attained a landmark status of sorts, bringing into its fold, dancers and dance enthusiasts, scholars, rasikas, writers, commentators, and scholars to converge and deliberate upon dance and the many aspects that pertain to it and are of crucial concern to it.

Over five days, a convenor who is chosen, uses her intelligence and imagination to identify and present a host of artistes and scholars who share their know-how of a particular idea or thought, allowing the possibility of deliberate discussion and debate.

Rama Vaidyanathan is one of the foremost Bharatanatyam dancers of her generation. She trained intensively under the legendary dancer, Yamini Krishnamurthy and the celebrated Guru Saroja Vaidyanathan. In a performance career spanning more than 30 years, Rama has developed her own individual style without forsaking the core principles of her dance form.

Having performed at every major dance venues of the world, she has been bestowed with several titles that include the Kalaimamani by the Government of Tamil Nadu, Kalashree by the Government of Kerala and the Kumar Gandharv Puraskar from the Madhya Pradesh Government as well as the Sangeet Natak Akademi Puraskar, just to name a few.

As Director of the Ganesa Natyalaya, New Delhi, Rama has been actively engaged in teaching for more than twenty five years. She balances a hectic performance schedule while conducting workshops and master classes allover the world, inspiring a whole generation of dancers.

This is a deferred streaming of the NKC 2022 Conference. Deferred streaming will start from January 20, 2023 10am IST.
Videos will be available ONLY till February 13, 2023 6AM IST. There will be no extension unless notified.
You will have to watch each video (session) within 4 hours of start playing (from the time you click 'Play'). You can watch it any number of times within the 4 hours. You will not be able to re-watch the session once you are done.
The Agenda tab is ONLY for reference and it shows the sessions as it happened.
Workshops (held at 8AM on Days 2 to Day 5 of the Conference) and Performances (4.30pm to 6.00PM IST on Day 1 and 1.30PM to 3PM on other 4 days) ARE NOT part of this streaming.
Tickets are non-transferable.
