iJAZZat: the JazZal experience

iJAZZat: the JazZal experience is where the timeless poetry of the ghazal meets the freedom, intimacy and improvisation of jazz.

Built around some of the most loved ghazals across generations, the evening takes familiar melodies and places them in an entirely new musical world. Jazz harmonies, spontaneous improvisation and contemporary arrangements meet the emotional depth of Urdu poetry, creating a sound that feels both nostalgic and refreshingly unexpected.

This is not a traditional ghazal mehfil, nor is it simply a jazz concert. iJAZZat lives somewhere between the two — preserving the poetry and soul of the music while allowing each song to breathe, evolve and take on a new character.

At the heart of the experience are Vandana Srinivasan and Harish, bringing together two distinct musical sensibilities to reimagine the ghazal through conversation, interpretation and improvisation.

Vandana Srinivasan is a playback singer and live performer known for a voice that moves effortlessly between Indian classical influences, ghazals, Sufi music and contemporary forms. Through projects such as The Madras Mehfil Collective, she has explored ways of presenting poetry-led music with intimacy and depth. With iJAZZat, she brings her love for the ghazal into a new sonic landscape — retaining its emotional core while opening it up to the language of jazz.

Alongside her, Harish brings a contrasting musical vocabulary that helps shape the jazz identity of the evening. Together, their interpretations move between structure and spontaneity, allowing familiar compositions to unfold differently in the moment.

The two are joined by Manonmani on Sarangi, Divyam Mehrotra on Piano, and Dhina on Percussions.

Expect an intimate evening of music, poetry and improvisation — where a ghazal you have known for years may suddenly sound completely new.
