Guruguhaamrta is proud to present the 2023 Global Competition of Muddusvami Dikshitar Kritis for students of vocal music. Year after year, the competition has gained credibility and interest among the student and musician community for its serious, focused, and academic approach to the works of Dikshitar.

The prizes comprise the much coveted “Vijayalakshmi Rajasundaram Memorial Tambura Prizes” as well as Cash Prizes.

Terms and Conditions

  • The competition focuses on Kriti rendition only and no Alapana/Neraval/Svaram singing is required.
  • The competition is open to all students of music between 8 and 25 (age completed as of 1st August 2023).
  • The competition is divided into 3 categories: Sub-Junior (8-10), Junior (11-14), and Senior (15-25).
  • For Sub-junior, 3 Dikshitar Kritis are expected, for Junior 5 Dikshitar Kritis while for Senior 10 Dikshitar Kritis are expected.
  • Any Dikshitar Kriti is allowed EXCEPT FOR "Nottu Svarams".
  • Previous-year winners (Tambura/Cash) are not eligible to participate in the same category this year.
  • The competition would have 2 levels – Prelims and Finals
  • Participants selected for the finals may be asked to learn new Kritis (for Junior and Senior categories) – the exact Kritis would be announced when the finalists are announced
  • All the above levels would be held on Zoom Video/Audio conferencing - the details of which would be shared prior to the event
  • We request you to consider making a minimum donation of INR 350/- (for students participating from WITHIN India) and USD 18 (for students participating from OUTSIDE India). This donation helps in keeping the competition sustainable.
  • There are two categories of contestants – those participating from WITHIN India and those from OUTSIDE. The Prizes (Tambura and Cash prizes) also would be in these categories.
  • Please ensure you register in the correct category - Guruguhaamrta would be unable to refund or cancel a registration if done against the wrong category
  • The prelims would be held on Aug 26th,27th, and Sep 2nd for participants from India and on Sep 10th and 11th for global participants.
  • The finals would be held on October 7th and 8th 2023
  • The prize distribution function is on November 5th (at a physical event) as part of the Dikshitar Day celebrations at Raga Sudha Hall, Mylapore, Chennai.
  • The focus is on a clean and clear rendition of the Kriti with NO Manodharmam aspects such as Ragam/Neraval/Svarams.
  • It is recommended that the contestants know the meaning of the Kritis that they have chosen to a reasonable extent
  • The judge(s) would ask the contestants to sing a portion of one or more of the Kritis they have come prepared with.
  • Please ensure that Shruti Volume is set to a reasonable level before singing.
  • We STRONGLY recommend that the children be accompanied by an adult during the course of the competition.
  • The competition may be streamed on FaceBook and/our Youtube
  • The judges would be short-listing contestants for the Finals. The exact number of contestants short-listed would be at the discretion of the Judges.
  • There would be two sets of Prizes - one set for contestants based IN India and the other set for those based OUTSIDE India. The number of prizes, as in the past, is based on the discretion of the judges.
  • The participants acknowledge that the decision of the judge(s) and the organisers shall be binding on all participants.
  • The list of Kritis is NOT required at the time of registration but only at the time of the competition. Please select Dikshitar Kritis that your Gurus feel, are authentic.

  • It is NOT mandatory for you to pick only compositions listed above – however, it serves as one confirmed source of Dikshitar Kritis, for your reference.
  • Guruguhaamrta, would NOT be able to provide any individual feedback about participants, after the competitions.
  • We understand that there may be students who may need help building a repertoire of Dikshitar Kritis - Guruguhaamrta would be happy to conduct (paid) teaching sessions through our network of teachers. Please email us for further details.
