Abhinaya Dance Company of San Jose will restage Jwala- the Immortal Flame with new work on environmental justice and the fires devastating Northern California. The performance will employ the conventions of classical South Indian dance, Bharatanatyam, to explore global warming, environmental justice and the Northern California fires. Trials and tribulations of survivors will also be part of the narrative. Fire is both a symbol of love, sex and ecstasy as well as an image of knowledge, creative inspiration and enlightenment; fire conjures up the suffering of unanticipated disasters such as earthquakes and volcanic eruptions; the funeral pyre also suggests death, liberation and purification.
