Whispers Along The Kaveri: New Secrets Unravel

We trace the river Kaveri from its source Talakkaveri to where it reaches the sea at Puhar. Using music, dance and narrative storytelling, we peer under its waves to reveal fascinating stories of musicians, dancers and writers who lived along its banks.

Whispers Along The Kaveri: New Secrets Unravel

Nadhi moolam Rishi moolam - so goes an ancient saying. The source of a river and of a sage are meant to stay under wraps in an enigmatic silence. In this dance theater presentation, we puncture that silence to reveal secrets that the river has held dear. Over millennia, as it gushed forth creating prosperity in its wake, the river held farmer, king and artist in its embrace. An artistic renaissance bloomed forth centuries ago by its banks and we see the effects of that onstage today.

It is always fascinating to connect today to the many yesterdays. Songs, dances and stories drawn from under the river's waves will illuminate the present moment - we dance along with the waters of the Kaveri as we do this.

Come journey with us!

Sankalpa artists use music, dance and narrative storytelling to unearth secrets the river holds dear.

Last spring, Sankalpa dancers premiered 'Whispers Along the Kaveri' as a fundraiser for the Livermore temple. I tried a new format of presentation that brought together my twin interests in dancing and writing together onstage. Along with music and dance, we used narrative storytelling to tell fascinating stories associated with the Kaveri. Not only did I find great joy in bringing these twin interests onstage, the audience reaction was heartfelt.

As artists, we rarely get to re-work a production but that is exactly what I have done over the past few months. I have tried to rework the production, adding and subtracting segments, songs and movements. We present new facets to the production this year.

I hope you will be able to journey with us - with the Kaveri flowing close -as we halt at towns along the way to uncover fascinating tales.

Testimonials

Congratulations to you and all the students who performed today. I could really feel the depth of all the research and efforts that went into this production. I really enjoyed “whispers along the Kaveri”. Loved how you weaved in contemporary examples throughout. Even now I can close my eyes and envision some of the forms created by you and your students. My grandmother’s name is Kaveri; I really had tears in my eyes at some point! Looking forward to many more performances!
